As soon as we woke up the next morning we drove to Madison, Wisconsin, to see the capitol. It was absolutely beautiful.
Here are some fun facts:
- On top of the capitol stands a bronze statue titled “Wisconsin”. Her left arm points east, representing the state’s motto; “Forward”.
- In 1933, Readers of The Capital Times were shocked to see a front page image of the state Capitol with its dome collapsed from “a series of mighty blasts,”as said by the paper. But all of that was an April fools prank!
- A replica of the Liberty bell, without a crack, is located in the capitol. It was given to Wisconsin by France in 1950.
- The state constitution is still missing. There are three handwritten copies of it, but the original one, drafted in Madison in December 1847, and approved in February 1848, disappeared shortly afterward.
